A QUESTION ARISES …

… as to category.  Is the new type of instrumental music which I am releasing on the Riverrun label to be labeled as contemporary classical? new jazz? easy listening? new age? electro-acoustic? all or none of the above?  Granted, there is a variety of genre and styles here, and you can’t easily put  “The End of a Northern Day”, “Funky Bunny” and “And My Robot can Sing” (to choose just a few from the examples you can hear on this website and which are already available in download releases) into one basket.  And I am not including my concert work or my music for children.

But, with the establishment of a website shop, and the hope of developing a wider audience, what boxes as to genre do I tick?  Certainly this type of music is known in the world of sync – music for film – and much of it derives from that.  but it is also music which can, I hope, be listened to as a foreground as well as a background activity.

I am still working on this, and discussing the question with John Mercer, Head of Riverrun and my long-time producer.  Our current inclination is perhaps to coin the phrase “Contemporary New Age“.  What do you think?  Anyway, one practical matter arising is that we are now thinking of including BESTIARY in the CHRONOMETER series – where it fits very well – and expanding on that area of work.  (Thereby delaying the cover and thus the release by a few more days.  Apologies.)
